Open Source Tools I Have Tried
Part of how I learn is by self-hosting open source software — spinning it up on my own server, configuring it from scratch, and maintaining it over time. It pushes me beyond just using a tool to actually understanding how it works under the hood: the infrastructure, the data flow, and the trade-offs involved. These are the tools I've run myself.
Gitea
A lightweight, self-hosted Git service. I use it as a private alternative to GitHub for personal and internal repositories.
Outline
A self-hosted knowledge base and wiki. I use it to organize notes, documentation, and internal references.
n8n
A self-hosted workflow automation platform. I use it to build and run automated pipelines connecting apps, APIs, and services.
GitLab
A self-hosted DevOps platform with Git, CI/CD, and project management. I use it for end-to-end source control and pipeline automation.
Redash
A self-hosted data visualization and dashboarding tool. I use it to query databases and build visual reports without writing frontend code.
Appwrite
A self-hosted backend-as-a-service platform. I use it for authentication, databases, storage, and serverless functions across personal projects.
